Hedges Avenue ‘busier than highway’

residents have backed a “damning” independent
traffic report that shows millionaire’s row has become the
Glitter Strip’s de facto highway.

The report, by Adam Pekol Consulting, was commissioned by the
Mermaid Beach Community Association to analyse traffic on the
exclusive Hedges Avenue and found the local
road busier than an individual lane of the neighbouring
Gold Coast
Highway during peak times.

The study was conducted in September last year and found more
than 747 vehicles used the road between 7.45am and 8.45am, as
well as 117 bicycles and 30 pedestrians.

Figures on the Gold Coast City Council website show 714 vehicles
pass through each lane of the Gold Coast Highway-Surfers Ave
intersection at the same time each morning.

The study showed the morning peak-hour traffic volume was more
than double the recommended maximum capacity and that local
amenities were “compromised”.

It recommended measures be introduced to reduce traffic on Hedges
Avenue.

Progress Association president Alf Vockler said traffic lights on
the highway were causing delays.

“The lights cause huge build-up and if you are driving there at
the wrong times, you can get caught and stuck in the heavy
traffic,” Mr Vockler said.

“Motorists see all the traffic and move on to Hedges Avenue
because they know it will take less time than using the real
arterial road,” he said.

“This is a damning report.”Among
recommendations listed in the report are installing stop signs
along Hedges Avenue to slow traffic movements, raised
intersections or creating truncated diagonal diverters to force
vehicles back on to the Gold Coast Highway.

It noted that diverters would be the most likely to reduce
traffic and increase pedestrian safety.
